A Communist Revolutionary

Mao was born into a peasant family in central China's Hunan Province in 1893.
He co-founded the revolutionary Society of the New Masses before graduating from the Hunan First Teachers College in 1914.
During the influential May 4th Movement in 1919, Mao became a follower of Marxism.
In 1921, he attended the First National Congress of the CPC and rose to the leading position of the Party in 1923.
During the following years of WWII and the Chinese civil war, he combined Marxism with China's practical conditions, blazing a new trail for the Chinese people to achieve independence.
A Strategist
Mao Zedong was a master in military strategies both in theory and in practice.
He led the Red Army in finishing the Long March, collaborated with the Kuomintang in fighting against the Japanese invasion during the WWII and ended the Chinese civil war. Famous battles such as Crossing of the Luding Bridge, Battle in Wuqi Town and the three times in breaking the encircling of the Kuomintang troops fully demonstrated his military leadership.

His works on military theories are prolific, including the renowned "Why is it That Red Political Power Can Exist in China?" "On Protracted War", "Concentrate a Superior Force to Destroy the Enemy Forces One by One" and "Carry the Revolution Through to the End."
A Poet
Besides being a great political and military leader, Mao also was a talented poet.
His poems, such as "Changsha," "Snow," "Ode to the Plum Blossom" and "Lushan Pass," are of high literary value and are cherished by the Chinese people.

Memorial
A memorial of Mao Zedong has been established in Beijing's Tiananmen Square to commemorate his immense contributions to China.
