For competing the top 10 of the 13th Chinese bridge, 15 young contestants started their semi-final at Jingdezhen, the "Porcelain Capital" of China for a long history with a magnificent culture, on July 18th and 19th. The first day’s competition was drawn among groups from America, Asia and Africa.
By drawing lots, three American contestants was given a mission randomly to learn making a piece of ceramics by their own, and then to sell it successfully. After arrived at a 1000-year-ago kiln where is still the workshop for making porcelain, the contestants carefully learned the methods of making porcelain in the procession of casting, printing blanks, decorating and glazing, by gently handling clay and painting their favorite patterns under the instructions of a pottery master.
They came into a shop next door to sell their product to the owner, without knowing whom is Ying Zhuang, a famous actor, also one of the judges. Ying tested each of them in the random chats for checking their knowledge about ceramics and Chinese culture. Other two judges, Liu Na and Xu Zidong listened carefully in the monitoring room. The contestants of Asian Group and African Group came to the kiln studio later that afternoon for building a kiln furnace under the instruction of a porcelain master. Before the kiln was to built, there was a task must completed, which required each of contestants to collect ten lipstick marks from tourists on a white vase.
The Contestants of European group and Pacific Asian group started competition in Yaoli village in Fuliang County which is 50 kilometers from downtown Jingdezhen. Two groups had to complete a task of exploring their own way to the ancient village. By winning the dice, contestants from Pacific started their exploration first and looking for someone who could give guidance to the destination. After searches in the town, Pacific Group first found the task cards from a local villager, the villager agreed to take them to the target place, Raonan Ceramics Studio. With good forest coverage, abundant animal resources, characteristic lanes, the town is well-known for its beautiful natural scenery. Additionally, it is the cradle of Jingdezhen’s ceramics industry.
